Shin Hye Sung has been found guilty of excessive gambling.
The talented vocalist of Shinhwa has been fined W10mil ($8,600) by the judge for his crime. From July 2007 to April 2008, Shin Hye Sung visited Macau five times and spent about W140mil ($120k) in baccarat games.
If you didn't know, gambling is illegal in Korea; Article 246 of the Criminal Act punishes those who gamble and Article 247 of Criminal Act prohibits anyone from hosting a gambling place for profit. Although the law has given very few exceptions such as gambling between family and friends for very small amount of money (10 cent bets), there are few facilities that allow access of Korean citizens (one casino and few racing tracks), you can thus be charged for gambling even if you play overseas.
We haven't seen Shin Hye Sung on screen for a while, and it appears that we won't be seeing him nor a full Shinhwa in the near future.
His management agency, Good Entertainment said on the 16th:
Shin Hye Sung had by chance entered a casino to gamble, while on a vacation with friends in Macau. He couldn't resist the temptation and curiosity got the better of him, and he kept frequenting the casinos afterwards. We (Good Entertainment) did severely reprimanded him after learning about it, and Shin Hye Sung had showed remorse over his actions. He then stopped frequenting the casinos from April 2008 onwards. Shin Hye Sung is deeply regretful over his actions and feels that he has let his fans down who have supported him for the past 11 years. He will be stopping all his activities for the time being.
