Old is the New Young for Korean Idols

Posted by Nez

Han Seungyeon of KARA, Onew of SHINee, Gahee of AfterSchool, and Sandara Park of 2NE1 have always gained much recognition for their young-looking appearance among netizens. But lately, a new fad has been rising in the world of idols. Now, instead of favoring those with “dongahn,’ or younger-looking faces, more interest has been gathering towards those with “noahn,´ or older-looking faces.

Many idols have been stealing hearts with their more mature appearances recently, including 2PM’s maknae, Chansung. Although Chansung was born in 1990, which makes him one of the youngest idols out there, his face looks so much older than he actually is. In fact, Junsu is known for saying on KBS, “T [thought] Chansung was older than me. I even thought I should [show respect towards] him [because of it.]” Another “old” maknae would be Bekha of AfterSchool. The Hawaiian native was born in 1989, but because of her foreign-looking face, netizens often assume that she’s actually older than she actually is.

Gyuri of KARA was nominated as having an older face by netizens as well. The 1988-er is so beautiful that she could be called a goddess, but the KARA leader looks much older in comparison to her fellow members. However, netizens have not forgotten her great beauty because of this. Instead, they commented, “She looks older because her face is long [but] she is beautiful.”

Last, but definitely not least, netizens nominated Rain’s apprentice, GO of MBLAQ as having an old face. Because of his abundance of facial and chest hair, fans have fondly given him the title of “Hairy GO.’ In fact, many people expressed their sorrows when GO stated on a radio program that he would be shaving for his boyband’s next comeback. Because of this, fans anticipate that he will give off a fresher, younger look, and stated, “We are sad that we won’t be able to see the ‘dangerous’ side of GO anymore.” Many netizens exclaimed, “Hairy GO!” in hopes that he would change his mind and leave his mustache be.

It’s certainly nice to see that fans are giving the older-looking idols a turn in the spotlight!
