Mnet Media responds to Hyori’s plagiarism accusations

Controversy surrounding plagiarism accusations from Lee Hyori’s fourth album has finally reached the ears of her company Mnet Media.
The Queen of K-pop was alleged to have plagiarized several songs without giving credit or compensation to the originals. The songs themselves were released in her long-awaited comeback album titled H-Logic.
She was building momentum in a short amount of time until she was slammed with plagiarism accusations for six out of the seven songs in her album, all of which were coincidentally(?) produced by Bahnus. Bahnus (real name: Lee Jae Young), the leader of the group Bahnus Vacuum, apparently gave 180 songs for Hyori to choose from.
Let’s roundup the Hyori plagiarism accusations, shall we?
Cookie Couture’s Boy, Bring it Back and Hyori’s Bring it Back, Lil Precious’ So Insane and Hyori’s I’m Back, Melanie Durrant’s Feel the Same and Hyori’s Feel the Same, Mikis Theodorakis’ The Train Leaves at Eight and Hyori’s Swing, Jason DeRulo’s How Did We Get and Hyori’s How Did We Get, Second Person’s and The Alphabet Song and Hyori’s Memory.
Stacy Maroske, a member of the girl group Cookie Couture, released a statement on zacktaylor.ca after finding out Hyori had plagiarized their song and has hired a lawyer to go after Hyori.
However, according to Mnet Media’s official statements, it looks like there has been a misunderstanding about the whole situation, similar to that of the guide version American artist Ke$ha’s recorded for SNSD’s Run Devil Run.
A representative of Mnet Media stated, “We were already aware that the guide version of the demo song was up on YouTube before the release of her 4th album. Bahnus had already made these songs 4 – 5 years ago and had sold them. However, the problem was, he then made recordings of the guide and distributed the demo CDs. Also, it is also said that the vocalists who recorded for the CD all possess a copy of it.”
“Bahnus has already secured the documents containing evidence for the recording time, the name of the vocalist, and even the daily records of the entered recording studio. Since YouTube and various portal sites possess copyright infringements, a request has come in to delete the leaked source. The leaked source has announced infringement of the copyright law by the composer.
The representative added, “During the sales of the 4th album, we have revealed this truth in the description of her song Swing. There is no need to receive a copyright approval because this ballad does not have a title and its author is anonymous.”
Although Mnet Media has made official statements defending Hyori, can the issue dissolve as quickly as it erupted?

Nichkhun has the Loch Ness Monster as a pet?!

Netizens deserve to be paid overtime because they seem to be working extra hard lately. After exposing G-Dragon at MAMA, they're already at it again. However, this time they have uncovered something even bigger, much much bigger. Finally, the elusive Loch Ness Monster has been found, and it was not in a lake in Scotland.
All these years of fruitless searching and it turns out that Nichkhun has been keeping the monster as a pet all along! Well either that thing is the famed Loch Ness Monster in his pants, or we have just uncovered Thailand's best kept secret. Either way, I'm definitely going to start telling people that I am Thai from now on. I'm tired of being called "Teeny Peeny!"
Okay, before all you girls start calling Nichkhun a pervert, you have to first know a few things about the male species.
First, 99% of us have absolutely no control over what goes on down there. That thing has a mind of its own! Granted it only has one thing on its mind, but nonetheless, a mind of its own. Even worse, it insists on coming out to play at the most inappropriate moments, and it will be more than willing to challenge your authority if god forbid you try to suppress it.
Second, if it's round and jiggly, guys will not be able to look away from it. It doesn't even matter what it is, as long as it's round and jiggly. They can try and fight it all they want by conjuring up images of their grandma, but their eyes will still be glued to the object that is round and jiggly. And poor Nichkhun had TWO things that were extra round and jiggly all up in his face during that performance with Ivy. Any guy in Nichkhun's position would have suddenly found that they too were keeping the Loch Ness Monster as a pet.
However, we must also recognize that Nichkhun's rather unabashed bulge could just be the fold of his pants or a trick of the lighting. After all, that performance was full of very questionable moments.
For example:
Oh come on! Now it's just getting ridiculous!
And just for fun, here's a bonus clip where Wooyoung was caught feeling Nichkhun's heartbeat in all the wrong places. I guess Wooyoung took the saying that "a man's heart is in his pants" a little bit too literally. The magic happens from 0:11 to 0:13.
Thanks Howla for the tip and CodeMonmonSeason5 for the video.
Now calm down Hottests, don't start squealing in glee just yet. That clip was purely the result of a bad camera angle.
However, Nichkhun's bulge incident is a different matter. What would you rather believe? That it was all just a trick of the lighting, or that your cutie Nichkhun is actually a beast? Yea... I thought so.

G-Dragon Exposed at MAMA?!

Eagle-eyed netizens are at it again, quick as always to point out G-Dragon's little wardrobe malfunction at the recent MAMA event. It seems that G-Dragon's performance at MAMA was so phenomenal that not only did it blow away the viewers but also the seam of his pants.
For those that are still skeptical about the photo, watch the video below, specifically at 2:51 into the video. The camera man must have been a fangirl at heart because he seemingly could not look away from G-Dragon's exposed region.
cr: BigBangSHINeeFanz
I guess this is a testament to G-Dragon's swagger and status as a fashionista because at first I actually thought the ripped seam was part of the outfit. He pulled off the ripped pants look so well that I almost took out a knife and ripped my own pants right then and there.
If only I had his swagger when I was a kid because then I too could have convinced others that the hole in my pants was there on purpose.
Like most Asian parents, my mom was cheap, and I mean dirt cheap. She would never buy me new pants, but insisted on modifying my older sister's skirts into pants that she would then force me to wear. It's bad enough that my so called "pants" were full of flowery patterns, but she had to take it to the next level by not including zippers. She made a slit in the front so that I could do my business, but she would never add in a zipper, claiming that it was too expensive to do so. Well after trying to use staples as makeshift zippers and ended up stapling a little "something" else to my pants, I decided that I probably should just forget trying to fix it.
I tried to convinced myself, "It's not that bad, at least I'll have underwear on." WRONG! Apparently underwear was included in the list of items that my mom considered to be too expensive. However, my mom did try to console me by saying that no one would even notice that I wasn't wearing underwear, and for some crazy reason, I believed her.
I went to school that day full of confidence, believing wholeheartedly that no one would notice. My mom could NOT have been more wrong. That day was how I first earned the dreaded nickname, "Teeny Peeny". I was only a kid then! What did they expect? A python?!? I mean come on! Even pythons were babies once!!

MAMA: the credibility, the controversy and the future
Mnet's new year-end award ceremony MAMA was no doubt a success. Although the show's rating clocked in at only just over 3%, today, the entertainment section of every media outlet in Korea was plastered with pictures and stories from this controversy-filled ceremony. While most of us have learned to focus more on special performances by artists rather than the awards themselves, the awards are still the meat and potato of the ceremony. Star-studded nominee lists, the nervous faces, drum roll getting louder, your heart beating faster, and of course, the winners holding their trophies so dearly while they thank their parents with teary smiles.
So has MAMA's distribution of major awards been understandable, or using a word that is so highly debatable, fair? Although many of the results produced hot reactions, let's objectively examine the daesang (main award) winners of MAMA 2009.
Best Song of the Year: I Don't Care
The honor of the best song of the year went to 2NE1's I Don't Care. 2NE1 is a group which can be labeled as super rookies and deserved to win the best new female artist award more than any other groups who were present. However, did I Don't Care really deserve to win the song of the year?Going back to the 2007 MKMF, we came across a similar situation as this year's MAMA - this year, we had 2NE1 as the super rookies, and in 2007, we had world famous Wonder Girls. They had taken the nation by storm with their massive hit single Tell Me, resulting in thousands of Koreans dancing to the song and posting the video online. There was no doubt that Tell Me had become something close to a national syndrome, but the award for the best song of the year went to Big Bang's Lies and the girls ended up with the Best New Female Artist Award. Why? It has been unheard of to give one of the daesang awards to a rookie group. Even legends like H.O.T. have not achieved such a feat. The only artist who has ever won a main award as a rookie is Seo Taiji. For those who are not so familiar with him, he simply started Kpop.
Now, back to 2NE1. I Don't Care was no doubt a popular song, but it is hard to say that it was as popular as Tell Me, yet the song somehow managed to push 2NE1 to a level that nobody has managed to reach since the creator of Kpop did. The only explanation that appears to make sense is that I Don't Care was given the honor only because SNSD's massive hit Gee was not there to claim the title.
Album of the Year: Heartbreaker
More controversial than any other recipients of the awards, G-Dragon's Heartbreaker was given the honour of being titled the best album of the year. For reasons that most of our readers are already aware of, Heartbreaker has been under criticism of not only the public and figures in music industry, but also from government officials. It was also found to be inappropriate for younger audiences and was rated R.It appears that the reason why Heartbreaker received the award was the number of sales; the album sold over 120,000 copies as of late last month, making it one of the best selling albums of the year along with Super Junior's Sorry Sorry and Seo Taiji's two albums. If the album of the year award was based solely on the number of sales, then Heartbreaker deserves it. However, one must also take other factors into consideration. Heartbreaker has been received negatively by the public and the critics for plagiarism issues, and giving such an album the honour of being named the best of the year appears to be a little out of line. The problem is that Super Junior and Seo Taiji both did not make an appearance at MAMA, making it impossible to award the title to an album that is both high in sales record and free of negative criticism. Again, SM Entertainment's boycott plays into the award.
Artist of the Year: 2PM
The Artist of the Year, while not as fiercely contested in public opinion as the other two main awards due to the sympathetic view Koreans hold regarding Jaebeom, is being debated over as well. There is no doubt that 2PM rose to immense fame - or notoriety - this year, but in order to qualify for the artist of the year award, it is implied that the artist must have made some musical achievement during the year. Has 2PM made enough musical progress to be named the artist of the year over many other talented nominees? Or, have they been given the award solely based on either the sympathy the nation feels for their loss or the drama value of them crying for Jaebeom?Intentionally headline-grabbing award results?
If you have forgotten, MAMA had been claiming that they will have Jaebeom appear at the ceremony. Controversy is what they have been aiming for. While we're on the topic of drama value, the appearance of three TVXQ members and their acceptance speech for the award of Best Representative of Asia best represents what MAMA aims to do with this ceremony. The three members appeared to accept a seemingly meaningless award, then gave "heartfelt" lines that no news reporter would pass up if they were in their right minds. The appearance of TVXQ members had nothing to do with giving an award to artists that have contributed to the Korean music industry; it was to create more controversy and attract more attention.
As discussed above, the reason behind the credibility of MAMA being under criticism is possibly due to the fact that its uncomfortable relationship with SME stopped SME's artists from appearing at the ceremony, combined with the ceremony's focus on more controversial, attention-grabbing content rather than fair and credible distribution of awards. So what can Mnet do in order to improve MAMA? In my opinion, MAMA should minimize or get rid of the award ceremony format and stick to what it does the best: featuring special performances. Artists have put in lots of time and effort into preparing once-in-a-lifetime stages for the fans and it is unfortunate to see them being buried by controversy and drama surrounding awards. With their credibility down to the ground, perhaps Mnet should just focus on a concert-esque celebration rather than controversial awards that result in debates and boycotts. That way, we might get to see SME artists and trot singers perform in next year's MAMA.

The unfortunate story behind Mnet and SM Entertainment

Last night's MAMA, hosted by Mnet, was certainly a feast for numerous Kpop fans out there. However, as enjoyable as it was, the event was (and still is) swamped with layers of controversy, with SM Entertainment's boycott being the eye of the storm. Mnet and SME appear to be mortal enemies, but many still remember the fact that they used to be very friendly with each other. Exactly what made them become such bitter adversaries? Let's examine the dispute between Mnet and SME.
What exactly is Mnet?
Mnet is a media company owned by CJ Media which focuses on music, media, entertainment and web content business. CJ Media is a part of CJ, a South Korean conglomerate that is one of the top five largest companies in the country. Mnet is involved in pretty much every aspect of the entertainment industry, ranging from album production, distribution, sales, management, television broadcasting, online media and many other businesses. With these expansion, Mnet has become a giant in music industry, with market share of 44% in album sales and over 20% in online music sales.
Mnet and CJ are also shareholders in major entertainment companies DSP Entertainment and YG Entertainment. Although they own no more than 20% of shares from each company, the fact that CJ is a conglomerate means the aforementioned companies are now affiliates of CJ. Smaller entertainment companies with famous names such as Shinwha, Kim Dong Ryul and Wheesung are "affiliates" of CJ as well. Similarly, 30% of JYP Entertainment is held by SK, another conglomerate that is one of top 5 largest companies in Korea, making JYP a faction with as much support as Mnet has.
How has SME and Mnet's relationship developed over the years?
Before 2008, SME and Mnet were quite friendly. MKMF, now known as MAMA, featured numerous artists from SME which were given many awards. However, during 2008, Mnet proposed to SME that they would like to be the distributor of music produced by SME; in return, Mnet would receive certain percentage of profit from the sales. Mnet had already been distributing music of JYP, DSP and YG, and with the right to distribute SME's music they would become undisputed leader in the industry. SME refused the offer as they had the ability to distribute their own music and did not feel the need to pay Mnet for a job that they could do themselves (SME's stance against this was well known even prior to 2008 as evidenced here). Mnet undoubtedly held a grudge against SME for obstructing their dominance of the industry, and the friendship ended there.
CJ has also attempted hostile takeover of SME but failed. If they had been successful, CJ would have acquired control of Korean entertainment industry. These facts have not been well-publicized, until recent controversy involving SME and MAMA have brought the public's attention to the relationship between the two parties. With SNSD's Gee and MAMA, we have now witnessed the nature of their relationship.
How does MAMA play into this tense relationship between SME and Mnet?
One of the biggest controversies brought on by MAMA was the fact that the three members of TVXQ, Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu, made their appearance for acceptance of Best Representative of Asia Award. Although some may argue that SME's outrage was uncalled for, and that the trio is free to do whatever they want, the choice to make an appearance at an Mnet event was deliberate and could not have been a spontaneous, wanton decision.
So what's the significance behind TVXQ's appearance?
Many have suspected that the three members were able to act in such bold manner against SME in recent months because they were being supported by an organization more powerful than SME. With their unabashed appearance at MAMA, it now appears that Mnet and CJ might be the ones that have the three members' back. It is very possible that CJ and Mnet are backing the three members in order to win their fight against SME for dominance in the industry. If that is so, then TVXQ members have become mere pawns in a battle between two corporations.
SME, a company now known for its oppressive, big-corporate attitude towards its artists, is ironically under attack from one of the largest corporations in Korea. Both companies are profit-motivated organizations that are pursuing whatever action that generates more profit, so there is no good or bad in a situation like this. What is unfortunate, however, is that the artists have become the victims in this corporate power struggle. TVXQ, SNSD, and SHINee are all victims in this dispute between SME and CJ/Mnet; MAMA could merely have been the beginning of penance for these artists.

The Best and Worst of MAMA: Fashion Edition
Although many celebrities championed the awards at MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards) 2009, others failed to impress in the fashion department.Despite the unwritten "black-only" dress code that the stars seemed to unanimously follow last evening, the ladies of the night still showed individualism in their outfits, utilizing furs and accessories to give their varied dresses an extra punch.
Some pulled off a classy and sophisticated look, but others didn't. With that said, let's check out the best and the worst of the MAMA's.
BEST - Han Go Eun
It's been a while since fans last saw Han Go Eun on the red carpet. She looked absolutely gorgeous in a long black jumpsuit which fit her perfectly. This actress perfectly balanced sexiness and conservatism with an alluring v-neck cut on a classy floor-length look.
GOOD - Kara
Now I know what Gyuri means every time she calls herself a goddess. At MAMA however, it wasn't just Gyuri that looked heavenly - all five KARA members were stunning. In my opinion, Goo Hara and Nicole looked especially pretty with their little black dresses. Since the girls are always wearing bright colors, it was a nice surprise to see them display a maturer look in black.
BAD - Baek Ji Young
I love Baek Ji Young but I don't know what to say about this one. Baek's outfit was all over the place and just too much. Aren't jackets supposed to be worn on someone's body, not their shoulders? The awkward leg slip and half-heartedly-worn leather jacket just killed the outfit. At least her face looked pretty.WORST - 2NE1
Blackjacks, don't kill me for this one. No one can deny that CL's ridiculously huge fur shawl/jacket/vest/poncho was a mistake. I don't think Sandara Park looked all that bad but standing next to her members didn't help her look so good. It seems like their stylists wanted them to stand out so badly but they went too far. 2NE1 usually looks chic on stage but this time, the accessories just didn't work. I didn't mind the stage clothes 2NE1 wore for their musical stage but their red carpet look was a bit weird. This year's MAMA styles were definitely all over the spectrum - thought these outfit choices may be more of a reflection on the aforementioned celebrities' stylists, it's interesting to see these ladies rock or bomb the fashion side of this event.
Isn't it ironic how Han Go Eun, the actress of the bunch, was the best dressed at a music awards show?

Japan’s AKB48 at MAMA

Famous Japanese girl group AKB48 were invited to Mnet's MAMA and they performed their hit single from Japan titled River. I don't know much about these girls but they seem cute. Our very own johnnydorama is a big fan of these girls, then again what girl group isn't he a fan of?
During the performance, KARA and 4minute were shown on the screen and they didn't seem too interested in the performance. However, it seems 2PM's Taecyeon is fond of sushi as he seemed somewhat excited by the performance. Check it out below!

SM Entertainment incensed with TVXQ trio at MAMA

The inaugural MAMA awards might have been over just recently, with the TVXQ trio of Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu making an appearance and receiving the "Best Representative for Asia" award on behalf of TVXQ.
But in a interview with SM Entertainment right after MAMA was concluded, a representative said that they had no right to do so:
"The trio had no right to receive the award on behalf of TVXQ. The awards organizer should give the award to a liason on behalf of SM Entertainment instead. This is unacceptable since they had only invited the 3 members."

In response, a MNET representative stated:
"We invited all 5 TVXQ members to the MAMA awards ceremony beforehand. But only the trio responded to our request while the other two did not. We don't see any problems with the trio receiving the award on behalf of the whole group."
And the divide between both camps grows even wider after this.

G-Dragon and Taeyang live the Korean Dream at MAMA

Big Bang's powerhouse duo and best friends for life, G-Dragon and Taeyang, took the stage at MAMA to show everyone in the audience exactly what it means to live the Korean Dream.
A perfect concoction of an ostentatious rapper, a silky smooth singer and dancer, and a song deemed unsuitable for minors made for an absolutely incredible stage. This stage marked the very first performance by the dynamic duo and it surely made fans want more! After checking out the performance, many of you guys will most certainly agree.
They also each performed their own songs.

TVXQ’s heartwarming appearance at the MAMA’s

TVXQ members Youngwoong Jaejoong, Xiah Junsu and Micky Yoochun showed up at the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) as promised and delivered a very heartwarming acceptance speech.
On the 21st, TVXQ was awarded the "Best Representative for Asia" award.
Xiah Junsu stated:
"It's been a long time. It's an honor just to be able to attend such a huge event, but being able to receive an award, thank you so much. This award is not for one single member, but because all 5 members have put forth so much effort we are able to receive it. Thank you so much to all of our fans in Asia for allowing us to receive such a huge award."
Micky Yoochun stated:
"I think this is the first time I've wanted to sing so badly. After becoming a singer, I was able to meet such great members, that's why I think we are able to be here. We will work even harder to expand beyond Asia. We hope for even more support than now."
Youngwoong Jaejoong stated:
"I can't be happier because this award is coming directly from the fans of Asia. To our fans who are watching and possibly our two friends who are watching, I wanted to say that I love you."
Although Changmin and Yunho were unable to attend due to SM Entertainment's boycott of the MAMA's, all three members, especially Jaejoong made it clear that TVXQ is still as close as ever.

2NE1 performs 21st Street musical at MAMA

After hearing about Lee Young Woo and Sandara Park's kiss and watching the preview of 2NE1's musical, everyone's been waiting for the actual special stage.
Though MAMA (Mnet's Asian Music Awards) was missing a lot of great artistes, the awards show still was entertaining. 2NE1 didn't fail to show us another side of them. The different members used their solo songs and their group's hit songs to put together a long yet well-flowing medley.

MBLAQ are bad boys at 2009 MAMA Awards

From the moment MBLAQ stepped on the red carpet, the 5-member boy band grasped the attention of the fangirls present.
Coordinated in leather jackets and white wife-beaters, the rookie idols were looking pretty bad ass from the get-go. The quintet appropriately performed to Bad Guy, pulling off a strong performance that even their boss would surely be proud of. However, it was not the first time MBLAQ performed the ever-so popular song of Rain / Bi as their first performance was held on Mnet Countdown not too long ago.
There was not much of a difference, though, in terms of the choreography and order of singing; Thunder performed his solo dance at the end of the song again as well.
Although Joon's knee was reportedly injured, he made no noticeable mistakes and blended in well with the rest of the members.

TVXQ invited to MAMA?

We know that Mnet's MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards Show) has been actively trying to get Jaebeom to perform as 7 with 2PM. That most likely won't happen but they could still surprise us. Now there's word that Mnet put out an invite to TVXQ / DBSK / Tohoshinki, who's having their own issues with SM Entertainment.
An MAMA representative stated, "This award show will be aired in 10 countries in Asia. This is a great opportunity to show the rest of Asia, the Korean culture and music. It should be a high priority to have all our top artists in attendance and we gave out an invite to all the top artists including TVXQ."
There's no word on if the boys will attend or not but I'm sure many of you would love to see them together as one. MAMA is set to broadcast on the 21st of November at 7:00 PM KST at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium. Remember to visit the ONETVXQ Forums

Personally, I'm really wishing LeeSsang, Drunken Tiger, and Davichi will perform.

Lee Hyori ditches the MAMA’s

You'd expect Lee Hyori who's under Mnet Media to attend the MAMA's (Mnet Asia Music Awards), but nope, she won't be there.
The MAMA's have gotten off to an extremely shaky start with all the boycotts and artists not attending. They sure are plagued.
Mnet Media stated:
"Lee Hyori will not be able to attend the MAMA's. It's because of activities that were already scheduled long ago. In addition, Lee Hyori didn't have any activities as a singer this year, so it's appropriate that she's not on stage anyway."
For those of you who are still excited about the show, you can tune in on November 21st, 2009. That means you YG fangirls and boys.

2NE1 wants to win Best New Artist Award at MAMA

2NE1's leader CL posted on her me2DAY how much she wants to win Best New Artist at the MAMA's (Mnet Asian Music Awards).
She posted a picture of herself and Dara and wrote a message saying, "1121 U KNO WHAT DAY THAT IS." November 21st is the day that MAMA will be held on.
I was just as excited as CL until everyone trot singers, SM Entertainment, and Pledis Entertainment decided to not go.
You can actually go vote for the Best New Artist on Mnet's website. Unfortunately for CL, f(x) is in the lead, but then again they aren't attending so does that mean 2NE1 who is in 2nd place will win the award?
In somewhat related news, Dara posted some new pictures on her me2DAY as well. What a surprise! The selca queen uploaded pictures of herself playing by herself on the streets with some leaves.
